My Travels…So
Far
Up until
the last ten years or so, travelling had never really been high on my priority
list. I didn’t have that yearning to visit far off lands, that wanderlust to
see the world. I was happy in my little corner of the world, and it didn’t occur
to me to want more.
Growing up,
I spent time visiting all the typical places that kids in Ontario visit- day trips to
Toronto, Ottawa, and Niagara Falls. These outings were fun and memorable, and I
will always look back at them with fondness. Visiting the CN Tower was one of
my favourite things, and to this day, it remains so. Niagara Falls is much the
same, I still get mesmerized by the water, and could stare at it for hours.
The only major trip I had taken was when I was 12, to visit my Dad’s family in England for a month. It was an amazing month, and I wish I had been a little bit older, so I could remember more about it. Luckily, we have a lot of photos to help jog those memories, and my Mum also wrote a journal. I too wrote a journal of that time, unfortunately it was lost in a fire.
As
adulthood loomed, the need to see new places still wasn’t high on my list of
must do tasks. My travels in those days generally involved going to another
city for a rock concert- many a trip to Toronto or Ottawa involved damaged
eardrums, much to my delight. Seeing live bands is a major part of my life, and
could be a blog in itself. But, one blog at a time!
The
defining moment in my travelling life came in January 2011. A friend was going
on a bus trip to New York City, and she invited me to join her. It was just
like one of those moments in a cartoon where the character gets an idea, and a
light bulb dings on above their head. I had just received my passport the
summer before, and although I had gotten it to have a form of proper government
identification, I now looked at it as my ticket to a whole new world. Literally.
And so I
shall save the rest for the next chapter! I could seriously write a book on New
York. Maybe someday I will…
